May I be brave? I looked at Odita's work via the internet before his visit,a peripheral view at best. I was not thoroughly engaged... Then he spoke, and it all came into focus rapidly. His ideas and his visuals together make great work. However, it brings to mind that old question of how much explanation needs to be offered. After learning a bit about Odita's intentions, I feel that I don't need explanation of every piece he does. But what about those whose work demands constant explanation to be understood, or those long explanations on the labels at shows? (Dario Robleto)? Any other thoughts on this?
I don't know how spoon fed the work should be in terms of elaborate explanations, but I felt that the way Odita put his work into a specific context was beneficial particularly in regards to curation. By establishing the paramaters that his work was about layers of cultures etc. Odita removed his work somewhat from being viewed as an extension of color fields or geometric abstractions. Though his works are indebted to these movements he is using the language of "pure painting" to convey his messages of heritage and race.
